Previous Classes - Psalms

Class 1

Exercises:

  1. Pick a Psalm and read it every day for the next week

  2. Read the article, “The Book of Psalms – A Study” by Wayne Jackson 

  3. Read the article, “We Would See Jesus As Seen in the Psalms” by F. Furman Kearley PhD

Class 2

Exercises:

  1. Pick a Psalm and try to pick out as many of the poetic techniques as you can find.

  2. Watch the lecture, “Reading Poetic Literature (Part 1)” by WVBS on Youtube

  3. Read Book III of the Psalms (73-89) and notice the continuity between Psalms speaking of the one theme

Class 3

Exercises:

  1. Read the article, “A Prayer of the Afflicted: A Study of Psalm 102” by Wayne Jackson

  2. Read the article, “The Value of Human Suffering” by Wayne Jackson on Christiancourier.com

  3. Read, study, and meditate on Psalm 13

  4. Pick one of the following Lament Psalms and label the address, complaint, petition and praise (Note: they may not contain all or may be in a different order or may have other elements): 3, 4, 5, 22, 43, 54, 56, 61

Class 4

Exercises:

  1. Write a list of ways that sin has hurt you and your family before

  2. Meditate on Psalm 9 – God’s justice

  3. Read article, “Do the Imprecatory Psalms and Christian Ethics Clash?” by Wayne Jackson

Class 6

Exercises:

  1. Read one of the praise psalms and note all of the individual items God is to be praised for

  2. Study a song of praise from our hymn book. Prepare yourself for next time you sing it by reflecting on the words and the meanings.

  3. Incorporate more praise into your prayer life. Make a point every day this week to pray a special prayer to God simply praising Him.

Class 7 - Didactic Psalms

Exercises:

  1. Get a Scripture-Buddy! Ask someone to hold you accountable to your Bible reading.

  2. Pick a Didactic Psalm and underline all of the blessings which the faithful receive and all of the blessings of God’s word

  3.  Thank and praise God for His word every day this week – use Psalm 119 as your guide

Class 8 - Psalms of Ascent

Exercises:

  1. Build a temple

  2. Take ten minutes before coming to worship to read/meditate/pray on a Psalm of Ascent
